The American Eskimo carries the nickname "Eskie" and is perhaps the most beautiful of all dog breeds.
Its thick, snow white coat, striking black points, erect ears, and plume tail command instant attention.
The Eskie immigrated from Europe in the latter part of the nineteenth and early years of the twentieth centuries
with their owners. They originated from the German Spitz. The first complete three generation pedigree was registered
with the U.K.C. in 1917. The American Eskimo is also recognized by the A.K.C., and was recognized by the C.K.C. in 2006.
Generally a family-oriented breed, the American Eskimo tends to be initially wary of strangers.
This makes Eskies excellent guardians of the home. Possessed with remarkable intelligence, Eskies are easily trained.
Their temperament and keen wit make them ideal for obedience training. The American Eskimo is a very loving companion
and extremely devoted to their families. The U.K.C. recognizes two sizes for the Eskie, miniature and standard,
where the A.K.C. and C.K.C.recognize three sizes, toy, miniature, and standard.
The Eskies are by nature, healthy dogs, with very few known genetic problems. Their coats contain a natural oil
which allows dirt to fall from the hairs when dry. Therefore, they don't require frequent bathing.
All that is needed to keep your dogs coat looking beautiful is a regular weekly brushing.
They shed their coats twice a year, in the spring and again in the fall.
